Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town – Stamina and Fatigue items

Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town is a classic Harvest Moon on the GBA and one of the best in the franchise. Its complexity makes for a number of challenges certainly not found in A Wonderful Life on the Gamecube, for example. In this walkthrough, I explain stamina and fatigue, and list the values of stamina and fatigue replenishing items.

Skip to the bottom of the page to see lists of stamina / fatigue replenishing values.

Stamina and fatigue in Harvest Moon FoMT explained:

Stamina and fatigue are connected, but separate. Think of stamina as being one full green bar, and fatigue as being one empty blue bar. These bars are invisible in FoMT. Stamina is energy that is used up by using tools. Once it is all gone, imagine that you burn energy reserves, running yourself into the ground – that’s fatigue. When you run out of stamina and start burning through fatigue, your invisible blue fatigue bar fills, and when it reaches the top, your character passes out.

The fact that these bars are different means that certain actions can deplete or replenish both bars to the same or different degree. In the list overleaf, + numbers indicate foods that add to stamina, and – numbers indicate foods that reduce fatigue. In other words, negative fatigue is a good thing, like golf.

When your character runs out of stamina and fatigue, you will see him perform animations. As stamina decreases, your character will mop his brow, land butt-down on the floor, then finally wobble and collapse with a blue tinge on his face to indicate that he has run out of stamina. From then on, you will be using up fatigue. It’s useful to avoid using up stamina if you can, because the fatigue bar is more expensive to maintain.

When your character grabs his head and starts shaking it, you have depleted some fatigue. Next, he will hunch over and huff. Reach maximum fatigue, and you will turn bright blue. From then, you must be very careful not to over exert yourself, or you will pass out, be taken to hospital and lose a day of work. Recovering fatigue when blue is possible, but running and picking things up still depletes it, so finding a health item soon is advisable.

If working late at night, depleted fatigue can lead you to oversleep. You must replenish fatigue before going to bed to avoid this. Sleeping more hours recovers more fatigue and reduces this risk, but if the time of day is too late, food items that reduce fatigue will have to be frantically eaten in your house (in which no time passes) before sleeping. All hail the refrigerator. If you do oversleep, you may oversleep until 8am or 10am, depending on how fatigued you are.

When your character hunches over and huffs (second stage fatigue), that is the final point at which you can work before you run the risk of oversleeping until 8am. Sleeping while blue will cause you to oversleep until 10am. You can sleep less than one hour for a decent restoration of fatigue but no stamina regeneration. Not sleeping at all is very bad for both stamina and fatigue levels.

Certain actions, like working in the rain, lower fatigue independently of stamina. Give a cucumber to the Kappa in the mountain lake every day for 10 days to earn a blue power berry, which will permanently restrict increases in fatigue during rain and snow. Cucumbers grow in spring. I advise prioritising them. This makes it possible to harvest or fish at length in the pouring rain, while it takes care of the watering. That gives you less incentive to bore yourself stupid manipulating the weather by save-loading before going to bed.

As a rule, the hot spring is the best means of restoration. It’s free, available 24-7 all year round, and replenishes both stamina and fatigue equally – 1 point per in-game minute (real life second). Even if you’re blue as the genie, jump in the spring by 4.50am and hop back out again by 5.20am – as long as you hoof it all the way back to your house in the most direct way as possible, you will make it back in time to sleep (a mere 10 minutes), and for your next day you will be fit as a fiddle.

Throughout the day, it isn’t a bad idea to stop into Doug’s Inn (and Kai’s Beach House during summer, 11am-1pm & 5-7pm) to get some free water. You can drink as much as you want and it knocks off one of those pesky fatigue points with every glass. Again, since time doesn’t pass indoors, it’s an efficient use of your in-game minutes (though perhaps an inefficient use of your real life ones).

On the next page is a full list of ways to replenish stamina and fatigue.

This information was discovered by M.Villegas, Samurai Goroh, KOEI strategy guide and Chilari (SuperCheats); assembled by magnumdrag0n of the neoseeker forums, and myself; copyedited, rearranged and reformatted by me.

Each item is separated by a double dash // and contains two values in order: +X -X

+X = stamina points replenished

-X = fatigue points reduced (that’s a good thing)

There are two items you should never eat: Red Grass and Poison Mushroom. Both will reduce stamina and increase fatigue.

Items marked with an asterisk * are not available at the beginning of the game and must be unlocked.

Fish

Fish can be caught at the beach, in the mountain lake, in the Harvest Goddess lake, in the mountain river, and in the stream running through your farm. They can be caught any time of year. Fish species is for cataloging only and is irrelevant to their monetary and nutritional value. The only thing that counts is size – small, medium or large.
